Flight Instructor Rating Practicum
Overview
This unit prepares students to plan, conduct and assess ground and flight training for professional flight crew licensing. Students apply and integrate advanced aeronautical knowledge, instructional skills and precise aircraft handling, using effective teaching and facilitation techniques grounded in competency-based training, sound briefing and debriefing, and Threat and Error Management. On successful completion, students meet the competency standards for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Flight Instructor Rating Grade 3 training endorsement and Night Training endorsement, qualifying them to deliver day and night flight training in line with CASA regulations and organisational procedures.

Unit learning outcomes
On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:
- Apply specialised aeronautical knowledge from the CASA Part 61 Manual of Standards, and communicate the theoretical aspects of lesson topics clearly to students and assessors
- Plan and conduct ground and airborne training using appropriate instructional and facilitation techniques, including questioning, teaching aids, lesson planning and management of the learning environment
- Operate the aircraft with sound judgement and precise technique across all manoeuvres to a standard exceeding that required for the Commercial Pilot Licence (Aeroplane) qualification
- Analyse and assess student responses during training, and apply corrective measures informed by the rates and stages of learning, automaticity and the foundations of expertise
- Evaluate the cognitive basis of airmanship, including situational awareness, captaincy, prioritisation, load shedding and decision making, while managing threats and errors throughout instructional sequences
- Design effective training curricula, syllabi and lesson plans, and apply appropriate assessment standards and techniques consistent with instructor professionalism and self-managed professional practice

Hurdle
To receive a COMP (Pass) grade for this unit, students must meet all requirements below:
i. Complete all syllabus lessons to at least the required level of competency.
ii. Complete the minimum total practicum hour requirements.
iii. Pass the CASA Pilot Instructor Rating Common theory exam.
iv. Pass the Flight Instructor Rating flight tests to both CASA and CAE OAA standards.

- Flight instructor practical training and theory in the principles and methods of flight instruction
- Aircraft flight training – Dual: 34.7 hours
- Aircraft flight training – Mutual/Solo: 6 hours
- Pre-flight briefings: 10.5 hours
- Mass briefing instruction: 32 hours
- Principles and Methods of Instruction (PMI) classroom tuition: 12 hours
- Pilot Instructor Rating Common (PIRC) theory examinations: 6 hours
- Pre-licence briefing: 5 hours
- Flight tests: 3.5 hours
- Qualifications attained on successful completion: Flight Instructor Rating – Grade 3 training endorsement and Flight Instructor Rating Night Training endorsement
