Flight Instructor Rating Additional Practicum
Overview
This unit provides additional supervised training for students who require further practice to complete the Flight Instructor Rating. Building on AVF80006, it revises and consolidates aeronautical knowledge, instructional skills and aircraft handling needed to plan, conduct and assess ground and flight training, using effective facilitation techniques grounded in competency-based training, briefing and debriefing, and Threat and Error Management. On successful completion, students meet the competency standards for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Flight Instructor Rating Grade 3 training and Night Training endorsements, qualifying them to deliver day and night flight training in line with CASA regulations and organisational procedures.

Unit learning outcomes
On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:
- Apply specialised aeronautical knowledge from the CASA Part 61 Manual of Standards, and communicate the theoretical aspects of lesson topics clearly and accurately to students and assessors
- Plan and conduct ground and airborne training using appropriate instructional and facilitation techniques, including questioning, teaching aids, lesson planning and management of the learning environment
- Conduct clear, relevant and fluent pre-flight briefings and post-flight debriefings across the ground and airborne components of training
- Operate the aircraft with sound judgement and precise technique across all manoeuvres to a standard exceeding that required for the Commercial Pilot Licence (Aeroplane) qualification

Hurdle
To receive a COMP (Pass) grade for this unit, students must meet all requirements below:
i. Complete all syllabus lessons to at least the required level of competency.
ii. Complete the minimum total practicum hour requirements.
iii. Pass the CASA Pilot Instructor Rating Common theory exam.
iv. Pass the Flight Instructor Rating flight tests to both CASA and CAE OAA standards.
Content
- Revision of instructional principles and methods, including learning theory, perception, motivation and factors affecting learning
- Revision of instructional techniques, effective communication, questioning, teaching aids, lesson planning and behavioural objectives
- Practice in conducting instructional periods, pre-flight briefings and post-flight debriefings
- Revision of airborne instruction across the Flight Instructor (Aeroplane) Rating Grade 3 sequences as required
- Consolidation of aircraft handling and manoeuvres, including circuits, stalling, spinning, emergency procedures, instrument flying and navigation
- Refinement of flight manoeuvres and instructional delivery to the required competency standard
