Overview

This unit of study aims to provide students with knowledge and skills to design steel structural elements according to Australian Standards AS4100. Students will also be equipped to analyse indeterminate structures using force (flexibility) method and displacement (stiffness) method of analysis.

Unit learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  1. Analyse indeterminate structures using force (flexibility) method and displacement (stiffness) method of analysis (K1, K3, S1, S2)
  2. Predict the ultimate tensile capacity of steel members (K1, K3, S1, S2, S3)
  3. Evaluate the ultimate bending moment and shear capacity of steel members (K1, K3, S1, S2, S3)
  4. Assess the ultimate capacity of compression-only and beam-column members (K1, K3, S1, S2, S3)
  5. Design bolted connections, welded connections and faster groups (K1, K3, S1, S2, S3)
  6. Collaborate and design a steel structure considering different loading actions, serviceability and ultimate limit states (A4, A7)
